Ester of glycerin and stearic acid used as an emulsifier, opacifier and thickener in creams and lotions. Plain (non-SE) grade is a co-emulsifier; the self-emulsifying (SE) grade contains a little potassium or sodium stearate and can stabilise simple creams on its own. Typical use is 1 to 5%.
