Contract manufacturers in India

Make, fill and pack your product at their plant under your brand.

A contract manufacturer makes, fills and packs your product at their plant, under your brand. It is how most new brands launch: you own the recipe, the brand and the sales, and the plant runs production. Good partners also help with sampling, scale-up and paperwork.

What to check before you choose

  • Their licence covers your product

Ask for their FSSAI licence number and look it up on FoSCoS, the FSSAI portal. The product category you make must be on their licence, and the licence must be current.

  • Minimum order and batch size

Plants have a minimum batch. Ask what it is for your format and pack size, and what a trial run costs, before you plan your first order.

  • Certificates for where you will sell

Modern trade, quick commerce and export buyers often ask for audited food-safety systems such as FSSC 22000, ISO 22000 or BRCGS. Ask which ones the plant holds.

  • Who owns the recipe

Agree in writing that the formulation and specifications are yours, and whether the plant may make similar products for others.

  • Lead time and capacity

Ask how long a batch takes from order to dispatch, and how much more they can make if your sales grow.

Common questions

What is a contract manufacturer?

A company that makes your product at its own plant to your recipe and specification, and packs it under your brand. You sell it; they manufacture it.

What is the difference between private label and contract manufacturing?

Private label usually means putting your brand on a product the maker already sells. Contract manufacturing usually means they make your own recipe. Many plants offer both.

Do I need my own FSSAI licence if a contract manufacturer makes my product?

Brand owners usually need their own FSSAI registration or licence as well as the manufacturer’s. The launch guides list the licences a new food brand needs, with links to the official sources.
